CHICAGO -- Tom Sermanni coached the U.S. womens soccer team to a 2-0 win over China in Colorado in the afternoon. By evening, he was out of a job. Sermanni was fired by the U.S. Soccer Federation on Sunday after a disappointing finish last month at the Algarve Cup. The surprising move came just 16 months after he was put in charge. The dismissal was announced hours after Lauren Holiday and substitute Megan Rapinoe scored in the exhibition victory over China in Commerce City, Colo. "We felt that we needed to go in a different direction at this time," USSF President Sunil Gulati said. He said the federation will begin looking for a new coach immediately, with the team looking toward qualifying for the 2015 Womens World Cup. On Monday, a message on goalkeeper Hope Solos Twitter account addressed the firing: "Its a sombre day for us all today. Tom is simply a classy man in every way, and he will certainly be missed." Jill Ellis, the USSFs director of development, will serve as interim coach. She went 5-0-2 in that role in 2012. The womens team faces China again on Thursday in San Diego. "I was completely blindsided," Sermanni told SI.com on Sunday night. "Maybe Im losing my intuitive and perception skills, but I didnt sense a real unease in the team. But I could be wrong in that regard." Sermanni said he assumes there was "some degree of dissatisfaction among the players, otherwise we wouldnt have gotten to this point so quickly now." He added that the players did what he asked and he has "no qualms with them in the sense of having poor relations with them." He was hired in October 2012, but Ellis served as interim coach until he took over that January. Sermanni made his debut in a 4-1 win over his native Scotland on Feb. 10, 2013. He spent the previous eight years coaching Australias womens team, leading the Matildas to the quarterfinals of the last two World Cups. Sermanni helped the U.S. to a 13-0-3 record last year, but the Americans went 1-2-1 at the Algarve Cup, the last major tournament for the U.S. before qualifying for next years World Cup. The seventh-place finish included a 1-0 defeat to Sweden and former U.S. coach Pia Sundhage, ending a two-year, 43-game unbeaten streak. That was the first loss following a 16-0-4 start under Sermanni. "To put it in a nutshell, they just felt that the way I was managing the team wasnt working," Sermanni told SI.com. "It could be the U.S. team is a unique team that has certain demands that perhaps my management style or my philosophy didnt quite jell with." His firing came about six months before North and Central American and Caribbean World Cup qualifying, which takes place from Oct. 16-26 at Cancun and Playa del Carmen, Mexico. On Sunday, Sermanni experimented with a 4-3-3 alignment (four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards) and talked about the team making the most of its offensive opportunities. "I thought our movement was good, thought our passing was quite incisive," Sermanni said. "What we shouldve done better is finish the game off a lot earlier. We really need to be finishing these games off when were creating chances." The U.S. outshot China 23-1 and ran its unbeaten streak on home turf to 81 games (71-0-10). Holiday was back in the lineup after missing the Algarve Cup because of a family commitment. She scored in the 39th minute -- the U.S. finally solving goalkeeper Zhang Yue after a flurry of shots. Holiday nearly had another goal early in the second half, only to have it deflected near the goal line. The defence allowed only one scoring chance to China, which played defensively even after falling behind. "The most important thing is coming together now and figuring out what works and what doesnt," forward Sydney Leroux said. "Were getting better every single day." Any further improvement will come under a new coach. Authentic Channing Frye Jersey . Ireland was the last unbeaten side in the championship after France fell to Wales on Friday, and was favoured to end a three-match losing run to England with a side with more than twice as many caps, rampant momentum, and added incentive to celebrate Brian ODriscolls world record-tying 139th test cap. Authentic George Hill Jersey . Saltalamacchia drove in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning, Henderson Alvarez won for the first time in three starts and the Miami Marlins beat the Braves 3-2 on Thursday night. http://www.cheapcavaliersauthenticjerseys.com/. Kyle Shanahan was hired as offensive co-ordinator Monday after spending the previous four years in the same role with the Washington Redskins. Authentic J.R. Smith Jersey . 1. CAVALIERS: At 19-20, theyre a mess. Watched the game Tuesday night vs. Phoenix and their defence was poor (107 points and 52 per cent for Suns). Where is the high level play from Kyrie Irving and LeBron James (13 turnovers!)? Kevin Love looks like a man thats wondering what he got himself into. Authentic Shaquille O’Neal Jersey . All of 46 seconds into the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 victory over Alex Ovechkins struggling Washington Capitals, Crosby assisted on Chris Kunitzs goal.Madison, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Frank Kaminsky scored 21 points to lead fourth-ranked Wisconsin to a 62-55 win over Purdue on Wednesday. Josh Gasser added 15 points and Traevon Jackson contributed 13 for the Badgers (15-1, 3-0 Big Ten), whose win streak reached a season-high eight games. The win was Bo Ryans 159th in conference play since arriving at Wisconsin, setting a new program record. There was a lot of energy out there on the court, said Ryan. This would have been one to be a fan, to see two teams going at each other like that. Jon Octeus poured in 15 points to go with eight rebounds for the Boilermakers (10-6, 2-1), who have dropped four of their last six. A.J. Hammons picked up 11 points in a losing cause. We had to do a better job of moving our feet, and we didnt. We had to do a better job of just staying positive when we didnt get some calls, Purdue head coach Matt Painter said. Hopefully we can learn from it, and then next time it happens we can make the adjustments. The games fifth and final tie occurred with 6:49 left in regulation as Hammons connected on a jumper to pull Purdue even at 45-45. From there, Wisconsin reeled off a 9-2 run to take control for good. Kaminsky scored four in a row to start the surge and Gasser split two from the line to end it with 3:17 remaining and the Badgerss held a comfortable 54-47 cushion.dddddddddddd Four times the Boilermakers pulled within five points over the remainder of the contest, but the Badgers answered each time. Kaminskys 20th and 21st points on the night came from the free-throw line with 15 seconds left, just after Octeus got the visitors to 60-55. Earlier on, Octeus and Hammons both hit jumpers and Purdue was ahead 12-7 at the six-minute mark. Dakota Mathias then hit a trey and the Boilermakers edge was 19-14, but Kaminskys layup inside of four minutes left in the first half gave the hosts a one-point edge. Nigel Hayes hit two free throws and the Badgers entered intermission up 28-27. Jacksons three-point play was the last of six in a row to begin the second half from the Badgers, then a Kendall Stephens try forged a 35-35 deadlock. Gassers bucket again was the final of six straight by the hosts who led 41-35 with 12:52 to go. Though holding onto a slim margin, Wisconsin didnt give up the lead until Hammons shot. Game Notes Purdue shot 51 percent from the field (25-of-49) in defeat, while Wisconsin was held to 43.6 percent (17-of-39) efficiency which included a 3-for-14 clip from beyond the arc ... Kaminsky connected on 11-of-14 free throws ... Isaac Haas also picked up 11 points for the Boilermakers.
